You use "it's" when you mean "it is."
You use "its" when you want to convey possession.

"A lot" is two words. IT IS NEVER ONE WORD UNLESS YOU ADD AN EXTRA L AND YOU GET "ALLOT," WHICH MEANS SOMETHING ELSE ENTIRELY.
Similarly, "alright" is not actually a word. "All right" is what you're looking for.

I filed my acceleration petition today to graduate in December of this year. To really be this close to home stretch is a strange feeling, but not a bad one. "alot" is not a word. It is "a lot." Two words. Two wordsssssssssss. Please. The little grammar/spelling freak that still does live inside me dies a little bit each time an adult English speaker tries to pull an "alot" on me.
